Disney Feature Animation Backgrounds: Tarzan

November 6, 2011

Due to its labor intensive backgrounds Tarzan required more painters than any other Disney film–about 50 total. A number of beauties the came out of the Paris studio where work week hours differed, and artists spent more time on each piece. Lucky for them! Here are a few moonlighted scenes as well as a jungle illuminated by red flares. Art direction dictated that the red color of the flares be clean and bright, in fact we bought a special red to do the job–Pyrrole Red, which allows for cleaner mixing in such a dark environment, and therefore, maximum intensity.
